HopgoodGanim Lawyers is proud to have advised Generation Steel, an Australian-based steel company with a new era of high-quality steel for building, on the renewable energy arrangements supporting the Collie Steel Mill.
Set to be the first new steel mill in Australia in 35 years, the Collie Steel Mill has now secured its renewable energy requirements through a power purchase agreement with BHP’s Nickel West business.
Under the arrangement, renewable electricity generated by an operating solar farm and an operating wind farm in Western Australia will support the steel mill’s operations, using 100% Australian recycled strap steel and 100% renewable energy to supply Australian constructors, fabricators and end users with low emission steel products.
The project is expected to create approximately 500 jobs during construction and 250 ongoing roles in Collie, supporting new industry and employment in a town with a longstanding role in Western Australia’s energy sector.
With expected emissions of approximately 272 kg CO2e per tonne of steel, the Collie Steel Mill is expected to be among the lowest-emissions steel mills in the world, putting it at the forefront of low-carbon steel production.
The team was led by energy transition and decarbonisation specialist, Partner Jo Garland, with support from Special Counsel Jessica Marshall and Solicitor Tayla Donovan.
“This is an exciting development for lower emissions manufacturing in Australia and the just transition in Collie. The agreement demonstrates the role renewable energy can play in supporting new industrial projects and lower-emissions industry here in Western Australia,” said Jo Garland.
Congratulations to all involved in achieving this important milestone.
