Leading litigation expert Ian Hughes joins HopgoodGanim

HopgoodGanim today announces that senior Queensland lawyer, Ian Hughes, has joined the firm.

Ian brings with him an impressive 30 year track record, handling some of the country’s largest legal battles including multi-million dollar claims on behalf of major international organisations such as Italy’s national energy agency, Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi and machinery manufacturer, Same & Lamborghini, Britain’s ED&F Man, the US Department of Navy and the Panama Canal Commission as well as Australian groups such as Macquarie Bank, ABC Learning Centres, and the Australian Red Cross.

Ian’s work has included co-ordinating international legal teams in the US and Britain in a dispute over a “block-buster” pharmaceutical product, acting in major resource and energy litigation, leading cases concerning control of the Australasian refined sugar industry and advising on claims related to anti-counterfeiting technology used by various central banks throughout the world. He has also played significant roles in front-end transactions involving mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures across a range of industries.

Ian’s broad-ranging experience spans general corporate and commercial, contract, trade practices and competition, banking and finance, insolvency, intellectual property, energy and resources, property, insurance, building and construction, and administrative law as well as long-standing specialist expertise in a range of professional disciplinary jurisdictions acting both for regulators and for individuals.

Bruce Humphrys, HopgoodGanim’s Managing Partner, said: "The further growth of our litigation group under the leadership of Darrell Jardine shows our continued commitment to meeting the demands of our clients, both nationally and internationally.  Ian’s extensive commercial background and his decision to join our firm are clear testimony to the strength of the dispute resolution platform being offered by HopgoodGanim.”

Commenting on his decision to join the firm, Ian said: “HopgoodGanim has offered me a fascinating and exciting opportunity. The firm’s credentials already speak for themselves but its certainly very gratifying to be asked to play a role in assisting it to move to an even higher level of recognition within Australia as well as overseas. It’s all the more interesting for me because HopgoodGanim has achieved its standing as a pre-eminent law firm while simultaneously preserving a culture that sees it consistently ranked as a national employer of choice within the legal profession. That rare combination was arguably the most vital factor in my decision."

Prior to his most recent role at ClarkeKann, Ian was a 20 year partner at McCullough Robertson and a partner at Deacons (now Norton Rose).
