Last week the Attorney General issued a discussion paper addressing a number of issues associated with the mandatory reporting of data security breaches. For many, a conversation at the government level about these issues is long overdue.

There are currently no mandatory requirements under Australian law to report data breaches, with many organisations choosing not to report breaches, even if the data has consequently been misused.
