Paul is head of the Resources and Energy practice in Perth at HopgoodGanim Lawyers. He advises on a wide range of transactions and issues in the project lifecycle, including resource, infrastructure and tenure issues, corporate and commercial matters and project structuring.  Paul has been involved in the resources and energy industries in Western Australia throughout his career having worked at international firms, regulatory bodies and as a principal in niche firm Hunt & Humphry which merged with HopgoodGanim on 1 July 2017. 

He also has experience on financing projects, from an equity and debt perspective, having gained experience in both London and Sydney working with international lenders and equity stakeholders on M&A transactions, project development and project financing.

Mining and Oil and Gas

  • Acting for Silver Lake Resources on the sale and farmout of various tenement packages and projects in Western Australia and providing advice on operational and native title matters.
  • Acting for Matsa Resources on the acquisition of the Red October mine from Saracen, various other tenement packages and development of the Fortitude Gold Mine.
  • Acting for Emperor Energy (formerly Oil Basins) on a range of tenure (sale of onshore permits), corporate and contentious matters.
  • Acting for Eneabba Gas on the acquisition of the Ocean Hill onshore permit in Western Australia and subsequent farmout proposals.
  • Acting for UIL Energy on a farmout of a majority interest in an onshore permit in Western Australia and native title issues.
  • Acting for Barminco and its African joint venture with Ausdrill, Australian Underground Mining Services, on mining services contracts and associated contentious and non-contentious issues.
  • Acting for Watpac Civil & Mining (WA) on mining services contracts and associated issues.
  • Acting for MHM Metals on various proposed acquisitions of mining projects and related corporate and contentious issues.
  • Acting for Ascot Resources on the acquisition of the Wonmunna iron ore project.
  • Acting for Turee Creek Station in interactions with resource companies, including Rio Tinto’s Channar operation.
  • Acting for landholders (farming and pastoral) on mining proposals and renewable energy development proposals.

Infrastructure

  • Acting for Pilbara Ports Authority in relation to proponent tenure issues, development of new infrastructure (including both BHPB and FMG tug haven projects), proponent agreements at the Utah Bulk Handling Facility, dredging contacts and providing advice on operational and legal issues at the Ports of Port Hedland, Dampier and Cape Preston East.
  • Acting for Southern Ports Authority in relation to proponent developments and providing advice on operational maters at the Ports of Bunbury and Esperance.
  • Advising Mid West Ports Authority on proponent and operational issues at the Port of Geraldton.

Corporate and other

  • Acted for Emperor Energy (formerly Oil Basins) on a rights issue.
  • Acting for Magnum Gas & Power (now Raven Energy) on a rights issue.
  • Acting for Celamin Holdings on two Takeover Panel matters and a rights issue.
  • Acting for Polo Resources on a Takeover Panel matter re Blackham Resources.
  • Acting on several acquisitions of small to medium businesses.
  • Acting for venture and seed capital providers on early stage investments in both the resources and technology sectors.
  • Acting for Crown Perth providing independent certification of applications for approval of new and revised gaming rules.
  • Acting for Lateral various corporate, commercial and contentious matters, including the development of a crypto-currency exchange.
