Justin is a senior trusted taxation law advisor who advises on a wide range of complex taxation issues including income tax, capital gains tax, stamp duty and GST (in which he has a particular interest). With qualifications and extensive experience in both law and accounting, he is uniquely placed to provide collaborative, practical and commercial tax solutions for a range of clients, from individuals and small business owners to large corporations and government departments.

Justin works closely with other practice areas within HopgoodGanim, including corporate advisory, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, resources and energy, and family law, to advise on complex issues including the tax aspects of capital raisings, business acquisitions and disposals, and restructuring.

Justin is a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia and has sat on a number of its committees for over ten years.  He is a regular speaker at Institute functions. He also sits on the Queensland Law Society’s Revenue Law Commmittee, as well as the Law Council of Australia’s Tax Committee, through which he regularly assists with submissions to the ATO and Treasury on tax related matters.  

Justin was Recommended in Doyle's Guide to Leading Queensland Tax Lawyers, 2015-2017, and was also mentioned in the Australian Financial Review in Best Lawyers in Australia - 2018 and 2019 for Tax Law.  

Areas of Practice

  • Advising Stanwell Corporation on the stamp duty and GST issues associated with a farmin arrangement involving a petroleum lease application, as well as other assets.
  • Advising the Meridien Group on GST and income tax issues regarding the construction of a marina, as well as the purchase, operation and sales of retirement villages.
  • Providing specialist advice to family law clients on the taxation aspects of property settlements, including the Commission of Taxation's ruling in relation to Division 7A.
  • Successfully pursuing objections and appeals for various clients relating to income tax and GST matters.
  • Providing specialist GST advice to Deloitte acting as receivers and mortgagees in possession selling property.
  • Acting for the Meriton Apartments Group in relation to a Federal Court tax appeal.
  • Advising clients including Drillsearch, Terra Nova and other Canadian companies on inbound tax structures for foreign tax resident entities coming to Australia.
  • Advising the Commonwealth of Australia (Prime Minister’s Office) on GST and import duties associated with the importation of aircraft into Australia.
  • Advising Riverside Marine Group, an Australian tourism and leisure operator, on the importation of a ship into Australia.
