Jonathan applies his extensive resources, native title and cultural heritage experience to mining, oil and gas transactions, infrastructure developments, joint venture arrangements, and asset and share sales and acquisitions across Australia and internationally. In particular, Jonathan advises clients on mining negotiations and on all aspects of tenement management, both offshore and onshore, in multiple jurisdictions. Jonathan has extensive experience in linear infrastructure provision, particularly land access for roads, railways, and gas pipelines. 

Jonathan is also one of Australia’s leading native title and cultural heritage lawyers, as ranked by Chambers Asia Pacific every year since 2007. He was awarded as Australia’s Leading Native Title Lawyer by ACQ Magazine in 2013, and was listed in both Doyle’s Guide to Australia’s Leading Native Title Lawyers in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015, and  Leading Native Title Lawyer (project Proponent Representation) - Australia in 2017 and 2018. Jonathan has also been named by Best Lawyers International 2015 as a leading Australian Native Title lawyer, and was also named Best in Energy Law Services by Corporate LiveWire’s Global Awards, 2017 and in Who’s Who Legal: Australia 2017 for Native Title Law.

  • Advising an international mining company on a confidential mining venture in Queensland.
  • Advising Cockatoo Coal-Cougar on an energy cooperation agreement, underground coal gasification and open cut coal mining.
  • Advising Conquest Mining on land access and compulsory acquisition under the State Development Act by a competitor coal miner.
  • Advising Deutsche Rohstoff on its acquisition of water rights, and water infrastructure provision for its Georgetown project in Queensland.
  • Advising Northern Energy Corporation on mining lease applications, land access, rail corridor acquisition and the IFS process.
  • Advising Norton Gold Fields on mining sale and purchase agreements, joint ventures, cartel provisions and tenement divestment advice.
  • Advising on the negotiations for land access, compulsory acquisition, approvals and commercial arrangements for many infrastructure, mining and pipeline projects in Queensland, including the Carpentaria gas pipeline; the Ballera to Wallumbilla gas pipeline; the Moranbah to Townsville gas pipeline; major arterial road projects in South East Queensland; Century mine; Century powerline; Paddington Gold Mine; Georgetown mine; Callide mine; Moranbah North mine; and Tarong mining project.
  • Preparing due diligence and independent tenement reports for capital raisings for Stanmore Coal, Ausnico, Esmart Holdings and SolGold.
  • Advising Indigenous Resource Consultants on gas Joint Venture  for indigenous land in NSW
  • Advising Arrow Energy on due diligence for purchases of a power station and an LNG business.
  • Advising Arrow Energy on legal issues associated with the application for petroleum leases in Queensland, and the renewal of Authorities to Prospect.
  • Acting as lead negotiator for Queensland Gas Company in its native title agreements for the Queensland Curtis LNG project.
  • Advising AGL in its negotiations with the Wiradjuri people in relation to the Central West pipeline in New South Wales.
  • Advising Anglo American Metallurgical Coal on land access and native title issues and agreements at multiple sites.
  • Advising Belvedere Coal on a Cultural Heritage Management Plan.
  • Advising Bow Energy on native title and cultural heritage due diligence, and native title agreement negotiation and drafting.
  • Advising Brisbane City Council on future acts and a Cultural Heritage Management Plan for the Inner City Bypass.
