Catherine has more than 20 years experience in commercial practice, with a focus on property, banking and finance and local government.

Her experience base includes acting for major corporate and statutory clients in relation to acquisitions and disposals, property development, project structuring, joint ventures, commercial, retail and residential leasing and leasing of vested land, property due diligence, complex conveyancing and land tenure.  She also provides advice in relation to rights and interests in crown and freehold land including removal of Crown Grant in Trust, prescriptive easements and adverse possession. 

Catherine also has broad banking and finance experience which extends from documenting finance transactions to forced sales and workouts, insolvency and personal property securities. 

Catherine is highly regarded by her peers as a WA property sector specialist, and was Recommended in Doyles Guide to Leading WA Property Lawyers - 2015. She has also been named in Best Lawyers in Australia 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19 for Real Property Law by Best Lawyers International, as well as 2017/18 and 2018/19 for Leasing Law.  Most recently, Catherine was named 2019 Perth Lawyer of the Year for Leasing Law. 

Areas of Practice

  • Acting for the buyer in relation to the $142m acquisition of a shopping centre in WA including due diligence, review of leases and consideration of retail and development issues, GST, stamp duty, personal properties securities and arranging and concluding settlement. 
  • Advising in respect of a 2-stage sale and subdivision of land and development for a local government client in the Perth metropolitan area. Catherine’s role involved attendance at client strategy meetings, preparing expressions of interest, auction conditions, sale contracts, reviewing deposited plans and checking compliance with approval conditions, drafting encumbrances including notifications and restrictive covenants, consideration of the client’s obligations under the Local Government Act, drafting financier and special conditions and option to purchase and preparation of Deeds of Covenant and mortgagee’s deeds of covenant protected by caveat to ensure compliance with building covenants and design guidelines.
  • Preparation of finance documents and investigation and review of sale contracts, provision of strata titles variation and notification and Home Building Contracts Act advice to a bank client in respect of the finance of a $50 million strata-titled apartment development.
  • Supervising and managing WA aspects of a national residential property disposal program for a statutory corporation including consideration of the impact of residential tenancies legislation, preparation of individual sale contracts and documents for 33 properties with leaseback arrangements, subdivision conditions and coordinating and facilitating settlements.  
  • Preparation of finance documents and investigation and review of sale contracts and provision of strata titles act and home building contracts act advice to bank clients in respect of the finance of strata-titled apartment developments.
  • Provision of advice to a banking client and preparation of security documents in respect of the refinance of a turnkey construction contract for development of worker’s accommodation including consideration of land tenure.
