HopgoodGanim’s culture

HopgoodGanim's internal culture is centred on a concept we call ‘business mateship’. Joe Ganim and Paul Hopgood, the founders of the firm, embraced the ideas of collaboration and friendship right from day one. The firm was built on this philosophy of mateship, not only between employees of the firm but with clients and other stakeholders as well.

We believe in treating each other, and our clients, as we would treat our friends. Some of the ways we do this include:

  • Providing our clients with great service and breaking down the traditional conservative barriers between lawyers and their clients
  • Approaching our work with passion, positivity and a tenacious attitude
  • Openly sharing our thoughts and ideas for ways to improve processes and procedures
  • Providing straightforward and honest answers to questions from colleagues and clients
  • Getting to know more about the personality of the people we work with by finding out what 'makes them tick' and what their passions are outside of work
  • Communicating with our clients and colleagues as much as possible about the progress of work we're doing for them
  • Understanding and responding to our clients' needs so that we develop strong relationships that outlast a single transaction

Community involvement

The partners and staff of HopgoodGanim actively foster community partnerships and are proud to provide financial, legal and volunteer support to a number of local and national charitable organisations.

In 2009 the firm launched an employee volunteering program, which entitles every permanent staff member to take one day of paid leave per year to volunteer for an approved charitable organisation. This initiative gives our staff the opportunity to support and personally contribute to the great work these organisations do in the community.

Find out more about our community involvement here.

Sporting and social activities

The firm encourages staff to enjoy activities outside the office. HopgoodGanim sponsors our internal corporate sports teams, encouraging our people to get to know their colleagues in a social setting and 'burn off steam' after work in a fun and relaxed environment.

The firm holds a number of all staff and practice group social functions throughout the year. We also hold an annual fun day for all staff and their family members, including children.

Flexible working arrangements

Our part-time, job share and work from home arrangements are designed on an individual basis to take into account varying circumstances.

To assist our employees when they are away from the office on business, we provide remote access to the firm's email and IT systems. Senior practitioners are also given smartphones to help them communicate with and provide excellent service to their clients and colleagues.

Lower billable hours

HopgoodGanim is well-known in the legal industry for our lower-than-average daily billable hour requirement for legal staff, which has been set at 5.5 hours since 2001. Because our practitioners feel comfortable that they can meet their billable hour requirement, the emphasis is shifted from 'watching the clock' to providing clients with quality advice. We recognise that practitioners who feel they are able to achieve goals and meet targets are ultimately happier, more productive workers.

Paid parental leave

In October 2007, HopgoodGanim introduced paid parental leave for employees taking parental leave after being with the firm for a prescribed amount of time, in addition to any statutory entitlements. Both full and part-time employees are eligible for paid parental leave. The amount paid depends on the years of continuous service with the firm and the employee’s normal rate of pay immediately before commencing parental leave. Employees can receive up to 20 weeks paid parental leave depending on years of service, and we also offer paid parental leave for non-primary carers.

Health and wellbeing

HopgoodGanim offers a number of benefits and programs to support our commitment to work/life balance, and reviews these benefits on an annual basis to update the program with new initiatives. In addition to the other benefits outlined on this website, we currently offer discounted gym memberships, subsidised health and fitness classes, free flu vaccinations, in-house mental health and wellbeing seminars, corporate dental and optical schemes, and an annual leave purchase scheme.

Competitive salaries

Despite our lower than average billable hour requirements, we offer competitive salaries that are on par with many national top-tier firms.

Rewards for continuous service

The firm recognises the contribution of long service employees, and provides reward for both part-time and full-time employees after 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of continued service.

Bonus scheme

HopgoodGanim's bonus scheme rewards those employees who have gone the extra mile and provides an incentive for practitioners to achieve their personal best across a number of disciplines. The scheme not only takes into account contribution to profit, but also considers productivity, marketing and knowledge management, as well as overall attitude and behaviour.

Employee referral scheme

HopgoodGanim invites employees to help with the recruitment process by recommending friends or contacts who are interested in working with us. If a placement is successful, employees will receive a reward as thanks for their referral.

Quality work and clients

Our legal professionals undertake exciting and challenging work for a wide range of prestigious corporate and multinational companies, as well as government and regulatory organisations.

The firm is retained by, and has acted for, a range of high profile clients from different sectors. Read more about our clients and work in the Experience pages under each Service area.

HopgoodGanim has also been the proud recipient of a number of awards and accolades for our client advice and service. We’ve been ranked by prestigious international legal directories including Chambers Global, Legal 500 and Best Lawyers.

Secondments

As part of our commitment to service excellence and business mateship, we arrange secondments on a case-by-case basis to meet the needs of our employees, our clients, and the firm as a whole. By undertaking a secondment with one of our clients, employees are able to develop their industry knowledge, gain hands-on experience working in the client's organisation and work closely with people they may not otherwise have the opportunity to interact with.

Ongoing learning and development

HopgoodGanim is committed to the professional development of both our professional and support staff. We offer a comprehensive learning and development framework covering a range of important technical and soft skills, including people and leadership, business development and marketing, financial management and computer skills. We also run an in-house Continuing Legal Education program for legal practitioners to help them meet their continuing professional development point requirements.

Study assistance

Our educational assistance program provides support to employees who undertake study on a part-time or intensive basis to gain academic or vocational qualifications. We support those undertaking approved study with financial assistance and additional study leave for exam periods.

Professional memberships

HopgoodGanim maintains memberships of relevant legal and industry associations. Our employees are able to join work-related professional associations and attend networking functions at the firm's expense.

Conference speaking and attendance

Our lawyers are recognised as leading practitioners in their specialist areas of law, and are often invited to speak and present papers at legal and industry conferences. The firm also supports professional development by paying for employees to attend relevant industry events and conferences on a case-by-case basis.
