Right now, the system enacted by the former Howard Government continues to apply. Labor’s reform program is awaiting passage of new legislation.
Parliament resumes on 12 February 2008. Labor has announced that the first package of reform legislation – the Transition Bill – will be introduced in that week. We expect the legislation to take some time (weeks or months from now) to work its way through the law-making process, including passage through the Senate, which until 30 June 2008 continues to be dominated by the Liberal/National Coalition.
Labor has promised a wide consultation process and that the Bill will be made available “as an exposure draft for public comment” so there should be no surprises by the time the Bill becomes law. Until then the current system will operate as it did prior to the election.
