Justin advises on a wide range of complex taxation issues including income tax, capital gains tax, GST and stamp duty. With qualifications and extensive experience in both law and accounting, he is uniquely placed to provide practical and commercial tax solutions for a range of clients, from individuals and small business owners to large corporations and government departments.
Justin works closely with other practice areas within HopgoodGanim, including corporate advisory, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, and resources and energy, to advise on complex issues including the tax aspects of capital raisings, business acquisitions and disposals, and corporate restructuring.
Justin is a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia and sits on a number of its committees.

Mining and resources
- Advising on the stamp duty, GST and CGT issues involved with the transfer of petroleum assets within a corporate group in preparation for a float of the recipient company.
- Advising on the stamp duty issues associated with a farm in arrangement involving a petroleum lease application as well as other assets.
- Advising on the GST issues associated with farm in arrangements.
- Advising on PRRT issues arising out of a gas sale agreement, as well as advising in relation to relevant clauses in the agreement.
- Drafting consolidation tax sharing and funding agreements incorporating liabilities relating to the PRRT and MRRT.
Business and Commercial Matters
- Advising on corporate restructures including stamp duty, income tax and GST related issues.
- Advising on M&A, capital raising and IPO transactions.
- Setting up effective structures and drafting related documentation, such as joint venture agreements for property industry clients.
- Advising on all aspects of business sales and purchases and asset transactions for a variety of clients including high net wealth individuals, the mining sector and manufacturing businesses.
- Advising clients on GST issues associated with the exportation and importation of goods into Australia.
- Successfully pursuing objections and appeals for clients relating to income tax and GST matters.
- Dealing with tax related private ruling applications, objections and appeals.
- Representing clients in the AAT and Federal Court on tax related matters.
- Negotiating with the Australian Taxation Office on behalf of clients regarding payment arrangements and penalty and interest remission.
- Advising on debt/equity structuring issues as well as thin capitalisation and transfer pricing issues.
- Advising on the ability to claim GST input tax credits/reduced input tax credits on financial products and services.
- Advising on the income tax implications of securities lending arrangements.
- Advising on loan driven leveraged lease/major asset acquisitions involving Government and other tax advantaged entities.
