HopgoodGanim advises on Australian telecoms first

  09-Aug-2010

HopgoodGanim has advised the nation's newest telecommunications network operator, Indigo Telecom Australia, on the commercial and regulatory aspects of its communications services.

Indigo Telecom's multi-billion dollar hybrid communications network covers 100 percent of Australia's landmass and out to sea. In addition to satellite only mobile handsets, Indigo also offers a dual mode mobile phone combining both satellite telephony and GSM into a single handset using a single SIM card, providing customers with seamless roaming from terrestrial GSM to satellite connectivity when no longer within standard terrestrial network coverage.

According to Michael Morris, head of HopgoodGanim's Intellectual Property and Technology team, more than two years of planning have gone into developing the service.

"HopgoodGanim has advised Indigo Telecom on the commercial and regulatory aspects of its operations throughout its development. In addition to advising on the commercial arrangements associated with the new service, we advised Indigo Telecom on its corporate structuring, dealer and supplier arrangements, telecommunications and technology-based agreements, terms of use, standard agreement forms for end users, capital raising activities and employment matters".

Mr Morris says that a number of lawyers and legal technology staff from the firm have worked with Indigo.

"HopgoodGanim Associate Hayden Delaney has been working on secondment within Indigo Telecom to provide additional service and support during its critical start-up phase".

"We've seen Indigo Telecom grow from the concept stage to preparing to launch their services to market. It's very rewarding to see the way in which the legal and commercial advice we have provided to Indigo Telecom has helped them grow".

Indigo Telecom's service was officially launched by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh in Brisbane last month.
